Old city of Jerusalem and its walls

Partners : Godwin & Clarence

As a holy city for Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Jerusalem has always been of great symbolic importance. Among its 220 historic monuments, the Dome of the Rock stands out: built in the 7th century, it is decorated with beautiful geometric and floral motifs. It is recognized by all three religions as the site of Abraham's sacrifice. The Wailing Wall delimits the quarters of the different religious communities, while the Resurrection rotunda in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre houses Christ's tomb.

   HISTORY OF THE WALL

In 1535 when Jerusalem was part of the Ottoman Empire, Sultan Suleiman I ordered the ruined city walls to be rebuilt. The work took some four years, between 1537 and 1541. The length of the walls in 4,018 meters, their average height is 12 meters and the main gates open for traffic, with two minor gates reopened by archaeologists. These walls were built by  Sultan Suleiman the magnificent in the sixteenth century, roughly following the course of the walls built by the romans to encircle Jerusalem in the second century. Today, the Old city of Jerusalem is a unique synthosis of old and new, not only a historical showcase, but a home for many, and a bustling commercial area.

   ITS IMPACT TO THE CITIZENS/COUNTRY/WORLD

The walls of Jerusalem has a huge impact to the citizens living inside the city. God instructed Nehemiah to build a wall around Jerusalem to protect its citizens from enemy attack. It helps them survive from floods, it is where Muslims, Judaists, Hinduists worship and mostly it is where Jesus Christ was found and poached. The city and it's walls had also a big impact to the world because by this the world would not be the same thing as it is now if it wasn't for Jerusalem, if it wasn't for Jesus Christ who arrived at Jerusalem and spread his sayings, then we wouldn't be the way we are now.

ITS IMPACT OR CONTRIBUTION TO HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS
Although majority of impact to human relationships is negative inside the city of Jerusalem, there is still something positive between the chaos the city has been through. And what I mean by negative is that the city, Jerusalem has gone through wars, raids and even natural disasters. But not just that, people outside the of the city isn't only the cause of these chaos but also the people inside the city, the civillians. But after all of these things that happen in the past it brought realization to us people that are living now. This made everyone realize that things that happen on the past are meant to be forgotten and by this, this made the citizens living inside Jerusalem form a stronger bond, by making more walls the represent the times in which the walls were broken and rebuilt again in which they grew up with.

RELEVANCE TO "GOOD FENCES MAKE GREAT NEIGHBORS"

In the town of Jerusalem Muslims, Judaists, Hinduists are separated within the walls to avoid conflict and for it to be organize, once every year they would choose their best "builders" to repair these walls protecting them or inspect them to avoid falling debrees' to the citizens. As they repair the walls they simply just don't ignore each other if one saw another, these "builders" are actually being better neighbors despite having a democratic community in the city in the city. They're spending time together doing something productive, not just ignoring each other. This is basically what "Good fences make great neighbors" mean in the story/poem, Mending Walls. They did not only repair the fences once in every year during spring for their own benefit, but to benefit one another. Boundaries can make for a better relationship between neighbors.

RELEVANCE TO THE POEM, "MENDING WALL"

The wall of Jerusalem is said to be repaired once every year back on the ancient times because of the enemies that want to conquer the city. Just like in the poem "Mending Walls", every year these farmers always fix their fences. But in both poem and Jerusalem they have different situations, in the poem they only repaired the fences to increase its life span and let the other neighbor know that beyond these fences are beyond your territory. While in reality they only repair these walls of Jerusalem to increase their security and protection from dangerous circumstances. In shorts, both have walls but different situations. But both ahve the same goal and aim.

"ANG AKING NARAMDAMAN PAG FAMILY DAY"

Pangalan : Godwin M. Labaya
Seksyon : Grade 9-Justice
Petsa : Pebrero 05,2020

kaya tinawag itong "Family Day".
